Schwarzenegger has confirmed that despite his and Danny DeVito’s willingness to direct the film, the project is unfortunately no longer moving forward. He credited Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman with being responsible for the cancellation of the project.
“Jason Reitman screwed it up,” revealed Schwarzenegger. “Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father really wanted to do it. I really really wanted to do it. Danny DeVito really wanted to do it. We had the funding. When his father died, Jason said, “I never liked the idea” and stuck with it.”
Although production of “Triplets” was ultimately canceled, Schwarzenegger admitted he’s already working on a different film set for his and DeVito’s reunion project instead.
Who was involved in triplets?
Before his death in 2022 at the age of 75, Twins original director Ivan Reitman was hired to direct Triplets, with Schwarzenegger and Devito reprising their respective roles as Julian and Vincent. Written by Dylan Dawson and Lucas Kavner, the sequel is reportedly set to introduce the titular duo’s long-lost third brother, who was originally set to be played by Tracy Morgan.
Originally released in 1988, Twins follows the story of Vincent (DeVito) and Julius (Schwarzenegger), two unlikely twins who were separated at birth but reunite later in life. The film was a smash hit at the time, grossing $216 million at the box office worldwide and quickly became a fan favorite in the years that followed.
