The Marvels Star Brie Larson has discussed her character’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Why didn’t Captain Marvel return to Earth after Avengers: Endgame?

In an interview with Weekly entertainmentThe actress described Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers as a “workaholic” who “lost touch with herself and her allies,” explaining the character’s absence from key moments in the MCU.

“The way I was able to tap into it and understand it is the idea that Carol became sort of a workaholic and lost touch with her heart and with family and friends,” Larson explained. “I can definitely identify with that.”

Academy Award-winner Brie Larson will return in The Marvels as she reprises her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, who fans last saw in Avengers: Endgame. Joining Larson in the sequel are WandaVision breakout star Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Wonder.

The sequel will be directed by Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”) from a script by Megan McDonnell. Also joining the cast are MCU veteran Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and popular South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon in an undisclosed role.

“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and exacted revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads the synopsis. “But unintended consequences result in Carol taking on the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her into an unusual wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers merge with those of Jersey City superfan Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel and Carol’s estranged niece, Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must work together and learn to work together to save the universe as The Marvels.”

Captain Marvel debuted in 2019 and grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year. It also starred Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, who are both currently starring in their own Disney+ series, Secret Invasion.
