The Idol trailer previews the Weeknd-led HBO series

Sex, drugs and pop superstars take center stage in the new trailer for the HBO drama series the idol. The explosive footage teases the relationship between Lily-Rose Depp as rising pop star Jocelyn and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as cult leader Tedros. “The Idol” premieres Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max.

“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) latest tour, she is determined to reclaim her rightful status as America’s biggest and sexiest pop star,” reads the official log line. “Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or to the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

What can you expect from The Idol?

Tesfaye co-created The Idol with Reza Fahim and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. In addition to Depp and Tesafaye, The Idol cast includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Jennie Kim, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Moses Sumney, Hari Nef, Mike Dean, Ramsey and Hank Azaria.

The Idol had its world premiere on May 22 at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival. After the first two episodes aired out of competition, The Idol cast and crew received a five-minute standing ovation. However, first reviews for The Idol were mostly negative.

Levinson, Tesfaye and Fahim will serve as executive producers alongside Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joe Epstein, Aaron L. Gilbert for BRON and Sara E. White. Levinson also directed every episode of The Idol. The series is produced in cooperation with A24.
