In a recent interview with meetingHBO drama director Francesca Orsi shared a new detail about the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Orsi confirmed that they are currently finalizing a three-season plan for the spin-off, which will be based on author George RR Martin’s other Game of Thrones novels.
Orsi outlined the possible number of seasons for the series: “Ideally year by year and with a three part series representing the three novellas that George has written. Of course we’d like more beyond that, and George continues to think about the remaining novellas he wants to write, but at this point we have three seasons in mind that would represent each book, each novella.”
Martin expressed his full support for the ongoing WGA strike and recently confirmed that pre-production on The Hedge Knight series has been temporarily halted pending the strike’s fair conclusion.
What can you expect from the Hedge Knight series?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is based on the novel Martin’s Dunk and Egg. The short story revolves around Ser Duncan the Great (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) and takes place a hundred years before the events of the main series. The series is expected to have six episodes.
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes roamed Westeros… a young, naïve but brave knight, Ser Duncan the Great, and his little squire, Egg,” reads the series’ log line. “At a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet faded from the living memory, great destinies, mighty foes, and dangerous exploits await these unlikely and matchless friends.”
The prequel will be written and executive produced by both Martin and Ira Parker. Additional executive producers are Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis. HBO has other potential Game of Thrones spin-offs in the works, including a Jon Snow-centric series with the return of Kit Harington.
