The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film was directed by Tobe Hooper and released in October 1974. Despite costing less than $140,000 to produce and struggling to find a distributor, Texas Chainsaw Massacre went on to become one of the most influential slasher films of all time. It has received multiple sequels, prequels, remakes, and connecting points.
Hooper returned to the franchise in 1986 with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which was controversial for its lighter, darker comedic tones. The sequel’s success led to 1990’s Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and 1995’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, before director Marcus Nispel attempted to remake it in 2003.
