Executive Creative Director of Lucasfilm Dave Filoni went on to talk about the upcoming Ahsoka antagonist, Thrawn, hinting at a bigger role for the villain in the Star Wars universe.

According to Dave Filoni, who is the villain of the New Republic era of Star Wars?

In the summer edition of RichFiloni was asked if he saw Thrawn – played in Lars Mikkelsen’s Ahsoka – as the “big bad” of this New Republic era. He confirmed this and went into more detail about Thrawn’s character and origins, describing what makes him different from characters like Darth Vader.

“Definitely, in my opinion. When Timothy Zahn was writing “Heir To The Empire,” Thrawn became this iconic villain because he was unlike anything we’d seen before,” Filoni explained (via TheDirect). “He wasn’t another villain with a helmet and lightsaber, you know? There’s a great attraction to creating characters that resemble Vader because it’s so iconic.

“But the courage that Tim had was creating someone who wasn’t like that, who didn’t have those skills but could fight in a different way. In the words of “Star Wars,” the “war” part of it — he’s a grand admiral, a leader, a military strategist, a Moriarty archetype, someone who thinks outside the box and creates better strategy — it really resonates found. He’s a crucial player at this time. We’re lucky to have this character and lucky to have Lars (Mikkelsen) playing him.”

A number of Star Wars projects are currently in the pipeline, including the Disney+ series Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. On the gaming side, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was recently released, while Star Wars: Hunters, Star Wars: Eclipse, and a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are all on the horizon.
