While it’s unknown how HBO will handle it The last of us season 2a recent comment indicated that Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are making a big breakthrough.
Francesca Orsi, the company’s head of drama, spoke about the highly anticipated next season of The Last of Us in a recent profile on HBO with Deadline.
While Orsi noted that there’s not much that can be said about The Last of Us season 2 given that development is so minimal — and due to the ongoing writers’ strike that has stalled work on the project — she said that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the latter was one of the game’s developers) have “a good sense” of how to approach the problem.
“There will be a few new cast parts that I can’t go into detail about. And of course there isn’t much on The Last of Us that we can elaborate on because Craig can’t really come up with any meaningful initiatives from a script or cast standpoint,” Orsi said. “But he and Neil have a good sense of what’s to come. We will be moving the show from Calgary to Vancouver.”
Orsi went on to say that so far, all she can say is that the two are making “a major breakthrough,” both in terms of entertainment and clickers, the zombie-like monsters that populate the show’s world.
“All I can say is that he’s making great strides, both in terms of entertainment, in terms of clickers, and just simply the more nuanced, complex character dynamics between our characters Joel, Ellie and beyond.”
What do we know about The Last of Us Season 2?
While not much is known about Season 2 of The Last of Us, we do know quite a few things. Earlier this year, Mazin announced that the creative team will not be “constrained” by the source material for The Last of Us Part II.
“It should be pretty clear to everyone by now, but I’m not afraid to kill characters,” Mazin said at the time. “But the most important thing is that neither Neil nor I feel limited by the source material.”
Mazin also announced that The Last of Us season 2 will be split into multiple seasons, with the showrunner noting that there is “no way” it would be possible to tell the entire story in just one season.
“I think we know what we’re doing in this case,” Mazin said. “I’m not saying that in a snarky way, I’m saying it in a hopeful way. There will be things that will be different and there will be things that will be identical. There are things that are added and enriched. There are some things that are flipped. Our goal remains exactly what it was in season one: to deliver a show that makes fans happy. We have an incredible recurring cast. It’s a daunting task. But god, that’s what season one was like. You can’t make everyone happy. But we made a lot of people happy and that is our intention to do it again.”
