What to Expect in the Rosebushpruning Movie

“Rosebushpruning” is directed by Karim Aïnouz, whose latest historical drama “Firebrand” celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. The English remake is being written by Efthimis Filippou of The Lobster, The Match Factory and MUBI are producing the project.

“Marco Bellocchio’s amazing debut, Fists in the Pocket, was released over 50 years ago and had a major impact on Italian cinema and storytelling at the time,” Aïnouz said in a statement. “I am delighted to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work and create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family – which I hope will be both poignant and provocative in equal measure.” It’s a dream come true to work with such a dynamic cast of actors that I have long admired to bring this explosive adaptation to audiences today.”

The original 1965 film has been described as a major piece of Italian cinema, telling a dark satire about family and social values. The film, starring Lou Castel, follows a young epileptic man who plots to murder his dysfunctional family.
