The rights to the beloved 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated series were sourced from Nickelodeon.

diversity reported that at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 it was announced that Nickelodeon had acquired the rights to all 193 episodes of the 1987 animated film. The show will premiere digitally on Nickelodeon later this month in the US and will air on international channels and Nickelodeon-branded digital platforms in the future.

The 1987 series was based on the characters from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, although the series had a noticeably more kid-friendly tone than the source material. The show was a smash hit and spawned myriad types of merchandise ranging from toys to themed foods. Since then, several more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and films have been made.

The latest film in the series – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – is slated to hit theaters on August 2nd. The official synopsis for the film reads, “After years of being isolated from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic deeds.” Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a notorious crime syndicate, but they soon find themselves in trouble when an army of mutants is unleashed on them.”
