increase Instagram Cravalho announced on Friday that she would not be starring as Moana in the upcoming film. Cravalho didn’t give a specific reason, but said she would be the film’s executive producer and believes the cast should “accurately” represent the characters and stories they tell.
Cravalho ended her message by saying she was “honoured” to pass the baton to the “next young woman of Pacific descent” to play the role.
“Aloha Mai Kakou,” wrote Cravalho. “As I’m sure you’ve heard, the live action adaptation of Moana is in the works and you’ve all been very patiently awaiting updates. So I wrote down a few things. When I was cast as Moana when I was 14, it changed my life beautifully and launched my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I think it’s absolutely critical that the cast accurately represent the characters and stories we want to tell. As the film’s executive producer, I can’t wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s brave spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength. It is my great honor to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific descent to honor the incredible cultures and communities of our Pacific people who inspired her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representations to come become. mahalo.”

The Moiana The live-action remake will be produced by Johnson, who plans to return for the remake, as well as Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions banner and Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. Executive Producer will be Auli’i Cravalho — the voice of Moana in the 2016 film — and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for Moana, will also be involved in producing the remake, alongside Samoan industry expert Dana Ledoux Miller.
