The Academy has introduced new requirements for nominating films for Best Picture oscars.
The Academy has introduced new requirements for nominating films for Best Picture oscars.
Previously, for a film to qualify for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, it was required to have a week-long theatrical release in one of the six eligible U.S. cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Miami, and Atlanta).
In order for a film to qualify for Best Film, you must have an “extended theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 US markets, no later than 45 days after initial release.” The Academy also announced that “distributors for films releasing late in the year and after the January 10th must submit release plans to the Academy for review.” Your extended theatrical release must be completed no later than January 24th. Releases outside of the US can count towards two of the ten markets.
This new rule targets independent films and streaming releases. For exampleLast year, Netflix brought Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to theaters for a week, which would no longer be enough to qualify the film for Best Picture. Netflix would have to expand its theaters to more cities if its films qualified for the Best Picture award.
This would also affect films like To Leslie, nominated for Best Actress, which was only shown in six cinemas in 2022.
