In a bidding competition meeting brings news that Netflix has successfully acquired the North American distribution rights to Todd Haynes’ upcoming romantic drama, titled ” May December, which is directed by Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. The streamer’s $11 million takeover deal follows world premieres in May and December at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where the film received an eight-minute standing ovation.

What is May-December about?

“Twenty years after their infamous love story swept across the nation in the tabloids, a married couple collapses under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past,” reads the synopsis.

Moore plays Gracie Atherton-Yoo in the film, who embarks on a scandalous relationship with an underage teenager. After serving a sentence for her involvement in the affair, she eventually married the said teenager and started a family with him. Meanwhile, Portman plays the character of Elizabeth Berry – the actress who will portray Gracie in the film. They are joined by Charles Melton, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Cory Michael Smith, DW Moffett and Lawrence Arancio.

It will be directed by Carol filmmaker Todd Haynes from a script by Samy Burch. It is produced by Portman, Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler, Sophie Mas, Grant S. Johnson and Tyler W. Konney. It is a production by Gloria Sanchez, Killer Filler Films, Project Infinity and Taylor & Dodge, with the latter two also acting as financiers.
