Margot Robbie will play Barbie in the film about the iconic fashion doll, but when Robbie and writer/director Greta Gerwig cast the role, they found that one actress embodied Barbie in every way – Gal Gadot.
“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy,” Robbie said Fashion. “Because Gal Gadot is so incredibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being so beautiful, because she’s so genuine and so enthusiastically friendly it’s almost stupid. It’s like just before you become an idiot.”
The Wonder Woman star wasn’t available for the role, but Robbie used Gadot’s “Barbie energy” as a guide to cast the film.
What can you expect from Barbie?
“After being kicked out of Barbieland for not being a perfect doll, Barbie heads out into the real world to find true happiness with a little help from Ken,” reads the official synopsis. Robbie plays the titular Barbie, while Ryan Gosling stars as Ken.
The film will feature different versions of Barbie and Ken. Actresses playing other versions of Barbie include Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Nicola Coughlan, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya and Dua Lipa. Scott Evans, Simi Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir will perform as variations of Ken.
Barbie is directed by Gerwig, who co-wrote the film with Noah Baumbach. This is the first Barbie live action feature film. Robbie will produce with Tom Ackerley, David Heyman and Robbie Brenner. Barbie is slated to hit theaters on July 21, where it will notably compete at the box office with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
