Disney has officially changed the release date for its upcoming live-action Moiana Film based on the acclaimed 2016 animated fantasy series. The highly anticipated remake was originally scheduled to hit theaters on July 2nd, 2025 and is now hitting theaters a week early on June 27th, 2025.

Further cast details have not yet been announced, but original Moiana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho recently confirmed that she will not be reprising her iconic character in the live-action adaptation. Instead, she will serve as executive producer and is excited to “pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific descent to honor the incredible cultures and communities of our Pacific people who inspired her story.”

Who is involved in the Moana remake?

The live-action remake of Moana is directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail. It will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, who plans to return for the remake, and Dany and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions banner and Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. Executive Producer will be Auli’i Cravalho – the voice of Moana in the 2016 film – and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for Moana, will also be involved in producing the remake alongside Samoan industry expert Dana Ledoux Miller.

The original was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. Not only was it a commercial success, grossing over $600 million, but it also received positive reviews from critics and two Academy Award nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
