What you should know about Ladies First

The official synopsis reads: “This timely, limited documentary series recontextualizes the irrepressible women of hip-hop and their role throughout the genre’s 50 years, putting them back in the canon where they belong: front and center, from day one to now.” Each of the four parts features a parade of famous hosts like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Rah Digga, up-and-coming newcomers and artists currently topping the charts like Lat to and Tierra Whack, as well as key figures from record labels, stylists and journalists. “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” contextualizes the story of music that changed the world in the broader social, racial and political landscape of the time and, crucially, through a female lens, from giving flowers to foundresses like Sha-Rock and Roxanne Shante, or hearing real-life conversations from contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray.”

The four-part series is a Culture House production. Executive Producers are Dream Hampton, Troy Carter, Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg, MC Lyte, Nicole Galovski, Justin Simien and Jennifer Ryan.
