After the official cast of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan Superman: Legacy Director James Gunn has revealed a new detail about DC Studios’ highly anticipated superhero film. Through his social media accounts, Gunn confirmed that the upcoming film would not involve the Kryptonian hero’s childhood in Kansas as his origin story has been sufficiently addressed in previous films and series.
“I think we’ve seen enough of his lineage on film by now!” Gunn said of his Bluesky account when a fan asked him to adapt the first pages of the All Star Superman comics. Meanwhile, when a fan volunteered to play the young version of Corenswet’s Superman on Instagram, Gunn replied that there would be “no young Clark” in the film.
Additionally, the filmmaker provided a new update on the current pre-production status of Superman: Legacy. He announced that they have already started developing the score for the new Superman theme.
What is Superman: Legacy about?
“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy will be part of DC Studios’ initial plan for its rebooted DC Universe, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The film is written and directed by Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad filmmaker James Gunn, who joined DC Studios as co-CEO in November 2022.
The film stars David Corenswet (Hollywood, The Politician) as Clark Kent/Superman and Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. Casting is now underway for the next Lex Luthor, with Alexander and Bill Skarsgård rumored to be on the shortlist of actors who could potentially play the DC villain.
Production is slated to begin in early 2024, in line with the currently scheduled theatrical release of July 11, 2025.
