Earlier this year, producer Jon Landau confirmed work had started on the next installment, which is expected to use the same technology as Avatar: The Way of Water.
Now James Cameron briefly touched on the project by seemingly confirming that several Alita sequels are in development.
“At Avatar, I work in Wellington and Los Angeles,” Cameron said of why he and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron decided to sell their home. “And I’ll be working on the new Alita: Battle Angel movies in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense to us anymore.”

The 2019 film was directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay by James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis and Rodriguez. Back in December 2022, Landau confirmed ongoing talks with Rodriguez about the potential sequel. However, there have been rumors that Disney wants Cameron to direct. The Titanic director is reportedly reluctant to accept due to his busy schedule.
Based on the manga series Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel starring Rosa Salazar (Undone), Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun: Maverick), Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book), Ed Skrein (Deadpool ) , and Jackie Earle Haley. It was the last 20th Century Fox film to be released before Disney’s monumental takeover. The film grossed over $405 million at the worldwide box office.
