“From the producers of the global phenomenon Bird Box comes Bird Box Barcelona, ββan extension of the film that captivated audiences in 2018,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must master his own journey of survival through the deserted streets of Barcelona. As he forges shaky alliances with other survivors and they attempt to flee the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat arises.β
Tyler Treese: Mario, the great thing about this role is that you can show so many different sides of Sebastian because of the time jumps and the different situations. As an actor, how satisfying was it for me to have so much to play?
Mario Casas: The most interesting thing for me when I started the project was the protagonist – he’s not just the typical hero, not just a white character, but he has many, many different shades and levels. As a viewer, you don’t know if you love him, if you show sympathy or not, if you justify his actions because of his loss or not.
In the flashbacks, we get a really interesting look at when the cataclysm happens. How was it portraying the initial panic in this great action scene?
It was pretty easy for me because the directors, the Pastor brothers, recreated a lot of real sets and it wasn’t just green screens. To give you an example, in the scene where this man falls on the car, it was a real man. It was a stunt – a wonderful stunt actor who actually fell on the roof of the car. So yeah, that made things a lot easier.
Her daughter in the film, Anna, is played by the wonderful young actress Alejandra Howard. Can you talk about just working with her and building the father-daughter chemistry?
For me, the most important part of the film was creating that chemistry with the girl on an emotional level. I really felt like it was the most important thing. I’m not a father but I have a very young brother and that inspired me. We talked a lot in the beginning so she could trust me and when we looked at each other you could see a real connection.
I also worked a lot with Naila Schuberth and it was wonderful. I think working with these two girls was the best part of the film.
