Blending fantasy and grounded drama, Ill Fares the Land explores the rise of far-right ideology through the prism of folklore.
According to director Patrick Ireland, the film’s mermaid is a kind of metaphor for “Asylum seekers who are currently making the perilous journey across the English Channel to reach the shores of Britain, only to encounter hatred and violence from large sections of the local population.” Population (…) These people have fallen victim to fascism – and alienated from their own humanity.”
Ill Fares The Land is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
