Was The Idol originally a limited series?

In an interview with diversity, Sumney was asked if he had an update on the possibility of a second season of The Idol. The singer-actor noted that it’s still too early to say, especially given the ongoing writers’ strike.

“I think we’ll just have to wait and see how everything develops. “It feels very early to say whether there will be a second season or not,” Sumney said. “Will there be another season on TV at this point? I don’t know. Like the writers’ strike and Sam’s got another show and everything’s on hiatus — I really don’t know what’s going on. When I signed up for The Idol I thought it was a limited series. And that’s why I have no idea.”

Sumney also stated that the series was “always five episodes long,” in response to public perception that Sam Levinson’s interpretation of the series was six episodes long.

“Now people are like, ‘There are only five episodes?!’ And I’m like, ‘It was always five episodes,'” he said.

The Idol was co-created by Euphoria’s Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. The ensemble cast includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jane Adams, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Moses Sumney, Jennie Ruby Jane, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Ramsey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Hank Azaria.

After a glittering premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, The Idol received many negative reviews, with most critics rating the series negatively. The sexual content and general themes of The Idol were driving factors for criticism.

Tesfaye, Fahim and Levinson are executive producers alongside Joe Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Nick Hall, Kevin Turen, Aaron Gilbert and Sara E. White. “The Idol” is an A24 production.
