What’s the status of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot?

In a recent tweet, Gad said people have been asking about the project. He announced that they were to begin immediately before the COVID-19 pandemic began. When they were ready to start again, his schedule became too hectic. Then – finally – the budget for the project was increased too much.

“A lot of (you) ask me what’s going on with this movie,” Gad said. “The truth is we were inches from start and then the coronavirus hit, we were inches from a fresh start and then my schedule exploded with conflicts, we were inches from a fresh start and the budget was overwhelming us.”

Gad said if fans still wanted it, they should let Disney know by getting in touch.

The reboot Honey I Shrunk the Kids – which would have been titled Shrunk – would have been a sequel to the original franchise. Gad played the adult version of Nick Szalinski, son of Rick Moranis’ Wayne Szalinski from the original series. Joe Johnston – who directed the original film – planned to return as director for the new film, which would have shot several years after the first film.

The Honey, I Shrunk The Kids franchise began with the original 1989 film. Two sequels have also been released, with the third installment (Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves) being released directly as a DVD movie.
