gargoyle Creator Greg Weisman doesn’t believe reports Sir Kenneth Branagh is set to direct a film adaptation of the popular animated series.
The Belfast Telegraph, Branagh’s home newspaper, recently reported that the Thor director would direct a feature film based on Disney’s Gargoyles. The story has since been picked up by other media. At Twitter, a fan asked Weisman what he thought of the news. The creator replied, “I think… that’s absolutely not true.” So did Weisman retweeted a post dismiss the news as “not real”.
Disney’s Gargoyles originally aired for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. The first two seasons aired on first airplay. The third and final season began airing on ABC in 1996 after Disney took over the channel. The animated series was only a moderate success at first, but has developed a loyal following in recent years. The Gargoyles franchise has also expanded into other mediums such as comics and video games.
Previous Speech from a Gargoyles Movie
It is noteworthy that there have been rumors about a possible theatrical adaptation of “Gargoyles” for many years. In mid-2011, Disney hired GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett to write the screenplay for a Gargoyles feature film. Acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele later presented his own film adaptation to the studio in 2018. Ultimately, however, neither version was realized.
Weisman spoke about Peele’s unproduced Gargoyles film pitch during a 2022 interview with ComingSoon. “The fact that he didn’t care about Gargoyles, knew what it was, knew who I was was enormously gratifying,” the creator said. “Unfortunately, nothing really came out of it, but I can’t say I wasn’t thrilled with it. It was neat.”
All three seasons of Gargoyles are currently streaming on Disney+.
