Emilia Clarke on Keeping Secrets for Marvel: “It’s So Much Easier”

The biggest threat to Wonder isn’t superhero fatigue, it’s spoilers. Marvel’s innate ability to withhold information from the public is one of its crowning achievements. If there’s an actor who knows about spoilers, this is it Emilia Clarke. Before joining Marvel for Secret Invasion, Clarke played the role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, another series in which actors were trusted not to disclose important plot points. Compared to Game of Thrones, however, Clarke found it “easier” to keep secrets for Marvel.

“Tell you what, it’s a lot easier now because whenever it comes up or people want to ask, you can just say, ‘Dude, Marvel.'” “I can’t say anything,” Clarke said EW’s Around the Table series. “That’s exactly what I’ve said over and over again.”

On Game of Thrones, Clarke explained how Marvel provided the plan for protecting storylines and avoiding spoilers.

“When we were shooting Game of Thrones, When it came to the later seasons, there were some massive security changes,” Clarke said. “I was talking to showrunners David (Benioff) and Dan (Weiss) and they said, ‘Marvel.’ We’re just learning from Marvel. Whatever Marvel does, we just want to do it.” As a result, you don’t print anything – and then me and Peter Dinklage said, “I need it on paper!” I can’t learn my lines without putting them on paper have!'”

Who is involved in the secret invasion?

In Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury, former director of SHIELD investigating a rebel group of Skrulls trying to take control of Earth. Recurring MCU cast members include Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Clarke plays G’iah, Talos’ daughter.

“Set in today’s MCU, Fury learns of a covert invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls,” reads the official synopsis. “Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who have made a life for themselves on Earth. Together, they race against time to thwart an impending Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

Secret Invasion was created by Kyle Bradstreet. The first episode of the six-part series is now available to stream on Disney+.
