NEON has officially announced the release of the upcoming historical thriller Eileen. The drama stars Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie in “Last Night in Soho.” Following its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the film is slated to hit select theaters on December 1, followed by a wide release on December 8.

At Eileen’s theatrical release, the film will premiere in the same month as several other high-profile films. This includes Warner Bros.’ Wonka, Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple.

What is Eileen about?

“The film follows a queer young woman whose dreary life spirals into endless misery,” the synopsis reads (via Sundance). “Set in the freezing cold of 1960s Boston, Eileen shuttles between her father’s dingy, emotionally haunted home and the prison where she works with co-workers who ostracized her. When an intoxicating woman joins the prison staff, Eileen is kidnapped. Just as the possibility of a friendship that saves (or maybe more) emerges and forms a unique glimmer in Eileen’s darkness, her new confidant involves her in a shocking crime that changes everything.”

Eileen is directed by William Oldroyd from a screenplay by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel. It is based on Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name. It stars Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Shea Whigham (True Detective), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy) and Owen Teague (The Stand).

The film is produced by Goebel, Oldroyd, Moshfegh, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu and Peter Cron. Executive Producers are Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Julia Oh, Gregory Zuk and Jamin O’Brien.
