The theatrical release schedule for next fall could change due to the strikes of Hollywood workers involving actors and writers. Accordingly diversityWarner Bros. Film Group is considering releasing three films with a 2023 release date—Dune: Part Two, The Color Purple and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom—until 2024.
Why should Dune 2 and Aquaman 2
For Dune 2, Variety reports that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment will have to agree on a new release date if the film is pushed back to 2024. According to Variety sources, Warner Bros. hasn’t reached out to Legendary to push the sequel back to 2024, and for now the plan is to release the film on a scheduled November 3rd.
The Color Purple, a musical slated for December 20, would rely on an awards campaign to market the film, a source told Variety. With the actors and writers on strike, SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America are not allowing their members to sponsor future projects, meaning there are no awards campaigns.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, has problems other than the labor strikes. The sequel was recently completed third round of new admissions. Warner Bros. also dropped Ben Affleck’s Batman entirely from the film. Also, after the two Shazam! movies, the DC movie is under pressure to do well at the box office. Fury of the Gods and The Flash flopped.
A prerequisite for the reorganization of the dismissal dates is the termination of the labor disputes. However, a Variety source called the union struggles “unpredictable” and there was no timeline for a resolution.
