director Christopher nolan has said he will not be working on another film until the end of the actors’ strike.
Nolan’s latest film is Oppenheimer, a historical thriller starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023 as the film’s cast walked out of the London premiere.
“I have to acknowledge the work of our incredible cast, led by Cillian Murphy,” Nolan said at the premiere (via meeting). “The list is huge – Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and many more. … You’ve seen her on the red carpet before here. Unfortunately they are off to write their picket signs for what we think is an upcoming SAG strike and to join one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the fight for fair wages for working members of their union.”
When asked if he would be writing another film during the strike, Nolan replied BBC“No, absolutely. It’s very important that everyone understands that this is a pivotal moment in the relationship between working class people and Hollywood. This isn’t about me, this isn’t about the stars of my film. This is about actor job jobs, this is about television program staff trying to raise a family and keep the food on the table.”
