What is Carmen about?
Directed by Benjamin Millepied, his feature film debut, Carmen originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. The film hit theaters this year. It follows Carmen (Barrera), a young woman from Mexico who is forced to flee to the United States. Her story is soon linked to that of Aidan (Mescal), a volunteer border patrol agent and Marine who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. The two embark together to get to Los Angeles.

SUMMARY
CARMEN follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert after the brutal murder of her mother. Carmen (MELISSA BARRERA) survives a horrifying and dangerous illegal crossing into the United States, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border patrol officer who murders two other immigrants in her group in cold blood. When the Border Patrol Agent and his patrol partner Aidan (PAUL MESCAL) – a Marine with PTSD – get caught in a deadly standoff, Carmen and Aidan are forced to flee together. They make their way north towards Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the moody Masilda (ROSSY DE PALMA) and owner of La Sombra nightclub – a haven for music and dance. Carmen and Aidan find both comfort and unwavering love for each other in the safety of Masilda’s magical retreat, but time is ticking as the police hunt draws ever closer.
