While this is a good start, the number is significantly lower than Furious 7 ($147 million), The Fate of the Furious ($98 million), Fast and Furious 6 ($97 million), Fast Five ($86 million) and Fast & Furious ($70.9 million) and F9: The Fast Saga ($70 million). Considering we’re on the tenth (and ongoing) episode (with Hobbs & Shaw the eleventh), it makes sense that some fatigue is setting in. Everyone involved was probably expecting numbers in the region of $80 million given the hefty $340 million asking price for the day, but that’s still a solid start for the epic.

Abroad, the Universal sequel opened with $251.4 million from 84 markets, bringing the worldwide total by opening weekend to $319 million.

Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 plummeted 47% in the third frame and raked in another $32.7 million to bring its domestic total to $267.2 million. James Gunn’s finale is a long way from matching the final scores of the 2014 original ($333.7 million) and Vol. 1. 2 ($389.8 million), but it’s holding up well and slowly climbing the MCU box office ladder. At this point, the picture has already surpassed Captain America: Winter Soldier’s domestic gross of $259 million and just shy of Doctor Strange’s worldwide total of $676 million.
