What does Bob Iger have to say about the Super Mario Bros. movie?

During Disney’s recent earnings conference call on Wednesday (via VGC) Iger first spoke about Universal and his success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Iger said it was “proof that people love being entertained in the cinema” and gives them reason to still be optimistic about the movie business as a whole.

“Hello everyone,” said Iger. “Allow me to digress for a moment and congratulate Universal on the tremendous success of Super Mario Bros. It unquestionably proves that people love to be entertained in cinemas around the world and it gives us reason to be optimistic about the film business.”

The comments follow the release of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” last month, which has quickly become a huge hit for Nintendo, Illumination and Universal Pictures. To date, the film has grossed $748.7 million at the box office worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and also the highest-grossing film of all time to be based on a video game.

The feature film also set box office records for the largest worldwide animated film opening weekend ever and is expected to eventually gross more than $1 billion at the box office.

Recently, Super Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto teased that Nintendo’s next film adaptation could feature more iconic characters from its vast roster of classic video games.

“Please keep an eye on our next production,” Miyamoto said of future Nintendo films. He then remarked, “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have many other entertainers (on our roster).”
