GKIDS announced on Wednesday that it had acquired distribution rights for North America Blue Giantan anime film from Mob Psycho 100 director Yuzuru Tachikawa.
When is Blue Giant coming out in North America?
With the acquisition, GKIDS will release the film in the US sometime later this year, although official release information has not yet been announced. For now, there is a preview of the ongoing Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2023 taking place this week.
“Blue Giant” originally premiered in Japan earlier this year and has grossed one billion yen (about US$7.5 million) at the Japanese box office during its run. The film is based on the jazz manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Shinichi Ishizuka.
The manga originally appeared in 2013 and ran until 2016 with a total of 10 volumes, with 5.8 million copies in circulation in 2020.
“Dai Miyamoto’s life is turned upside down when he discovers jazz,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Dai, a former high school basketball player, picks up the saxophone and begins practicing day and night, determined to become one of the all-time greats. Leaving his sleepy hometown for the bustling nightclubs of Tokyo, he soon discovers that the life of a professional musician is not for the faint of heart.”
