The Barbie performers slept and entertained as a group

Speaking to People as part of a special issue of Film MagazineSimu Liu – who plays Ken in the film – said Robbie hosted sleepovers for her fellow Barbie girls.

“Margot was so great. “She was staying with the Barbies before the photography started, and the Kens were either allowed to come over for a quick visit or call and say hello,” Liu said. “So we made sure to show our support but not be intrusive with our presence. And all the barbies and kens were talking in the group.”

However, for a certain member of the cast, the group chat was not accessible.

“I don’t have an iPhone myself. … I have a clamshell phone,” said Michael Cera, who plays a character named Alan in the film. “But I still think I wouldn’t belong in the group chat anyway because (my character) Allan kind of lives in his own little world. Greta’s gift to me when I arrived was a picture CD of No Strings Attached by NSYNC, which kind of felt like a real guiding star in this character’s backstory.”

Issa Rae, who plays President Barbie in the film, detailed some more of the many on-set activities the cast and crew ran, and lamented that they missed the sleepovers.

“I arrived late. I was so sad (missing the sleepover),” says Rae, 38. “But there was so much activity together. Simu’s birthday took place there. And Margot and Tom (Ackerley, Robbie’s husband and co-producer) threw movie nights.”

Margot Robbie hosted Pink Day once a week.

Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in Robbie’s Barbie, also revealed what was happening behind the scenes. Gosling specifically recalled a “pink day” Robbie hosted for the cast and crew, where everyone had to wear pink or face a fine. The actor also noted how excited the male crew members were to commemorate their time in the film.

“Margot had this pink day once a week where everyone had to wear some pink. And if you didn’t, you were fined,” Gosling said. “She went around collecting the fines and donating them to a charity. What made it special was how excited the male crew members were. By the end of the film, they all got together and made pink crew shirts with rainbow fringes with their own money.

“It was a chance for them to show their respect and admiration for what Margot and (director) Greta (Gerwig) have created. It was almost like that scene at the end of Dead Poets Society where everyone gets on their desk and says, “O Captain! My captain!’ “
