The Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office will not be filing sexual assault charges against actor Armie Hammer, according to a recent report by diversity.
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said it could not prove the rape allegations against Hammer, due in part to the alleged “complexity of the relationship” between Hammer and his accuser.
“In this case, these prosecutors conducted an extremely thorough investigation, but concluded that there was insufficient evidence at this time to charge Mr. Hammer with a crime,” the office said. “As prosecutors, we have an ethical responsibility to only prosecute cases that we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt … Due to the complexity of the relationship and the inability to prove a non-consensual, violent sexual encounter, we are unable to prosecute the case over time.” to prove justifiable doubt.”
What was Armie Hammer accused of?
In February 2021, allegations against Hammer surfaced when someone identifying only as “Effie” claimed Hammer was physically abusive during a four-year relationship the couple had. The woman also claimed Hammer raped her in 2017, a claim he denied.
After the initial allegations, several more surfaced, and other women joined their own allegations on social media. Those allegations also included allegations of inappropriateness, as well as Hammer’s alleged cannibalism and BDSM-related fetishes.
Since the allegations became known, Hammer has disappeared from the world of Hollywood. After starring in high-profile films like The Social Network, Call Me by Your Name, Sorry to Bother You and On the Basis of Sex, Hammer has been since 2022’s Death on the Nile Not to be seen in any more films, which only kept him from his role due to the expense it would have incurred to re-start the project.
Hammer has said little about the allegations, apart from initially denying them, despite giving an interview with the newspaper in February digital newsletter Air Mail in which he spoke about her. Hammer said he contemplated suicide as a result of the argument and continued to deny any wrongdoing, but admitted to being “an ass” and “selfish” and living what he called a “very intense and extreme lifestyle.”
“Everything was discussed beforehand… I’ve never pushed that on anyone unexpectedly. Never,” Hammer told Air Mail. “I would grab these women, bring them in – into this whirlwind of travel, sex, drugs and big emotions – and once I was done I would just put them down and move on to the next woman who makes this woman feel abandoned or being taken advantage of.”
Hammer also pointed out that since the allegations, the actor is seeking to get better and recover through rehab and a sober companion. He also mentioned that actor Robert Downey Jr. – who had his own notorious battle with alcoholism – had been supportive of him and had also made attempts to challenge the “abandon culture” that he seems to attribute his career exit to.
“As soon as someone does something wrong, they are thrown away. There is no chance of rehabilitation.”
