Deadline has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring A total unknownJames Mangold’s upcoming biopic about musician Bob Dylan.
Reports surfaced that Cumberbatch would be appearing in the film earlier this year, but nothing concrete has been announced. A Deadline report of an afterparty during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival indicated that Cumberbatch would be starring in the film alongside Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning.
According to the story, Cumberbatch will play the role of legendary singer Pete Seeger. Seeger’s songwriting history is rich: the artist has penned songs like “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”, “If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)” and “Turn!”. Turn! Turn! (For everything there is a season)”.
In her history, Seeger was one of Bob Dylan’s earliest supporters.
Who else is in A Complete Unknown?
James Mangold is directing from a script by Jay Cocks with revisions by Mangold. It chronicles Bob Dylan’s rise in folk music and his sudden transition to rock ‘n’ roll. The film also features Dylan’s interaction with 1960s music legends including Joan Baez and Pete Seeger. Searchlight Pictures also owns the rights to the pop culture icon’s music.
The film is being produced by Dylan with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Andrew Rona serving as executive producers. Jeff Rosen, Dylan’s longtime manager, has also signed to Mangold as producer, while Bob Bookman of Veritas Entertainment Group, Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen, Fred Berger of AUTOMATIC and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company will also produce.
In addition to the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, Chalamet is also currently in charge of two high-profile projects in the form of Legendary Dune: Part Two and Warner Bros.’ musical prequel wonka.
